Chemical storage

Storing chemicals in drums and IBCs: what a warehouse needs from you

Pratish Logistics ·

When you approach a warehouse to store chemicals, the first conversation is usually a list of questions. That can feel slow when you simply need space. But each question has a purpose, and having the answers ready makes onboarding much faster. Here is what a chemical warehouse typically needs from you, and why.

1. The MSDS/SDS for every product

The Material Safety Data Sheet (also called a Safety Data Sheet) describes a chemical's properties, hazards, handling precautions and storage conditions. A warehouse uses it to decide whether the product can be stored at that facility, where it should sit, and which other products it must be kept away from.

Send the current MSDS/SDS for every product, including variants that share a name but differ in concentration or formulation.

2. Packaging type and size

A drum, an IBC tank, a carboy and a bag are handled, stacked and stored differently. Tell the warehouse:

  • The container type for each product.
  • The size or capacity of each container.
  • Whether material is palletised, and on what kind of pallet.

3. Quantities and duration

Space planning starts with volume. Give an estimate of how many containers you will store at peak, the usual level, and how long stock will typically stay. A rough figure is better than none.

4. Movement pattern

Some clients send one large lot and draw it down slowly. Others send and dispatch every day. How often material comes in and goes out affects staffing, layout and how stock is placed for picking.

5. Documentation for each consignment

Each inward consignment should come with the documents your business already uses, such as an invoice or delivery challan listing products, batches and quantities. The warehouse checks receipts against these and reports any discrepancy, which protects both of you.

6. Dispatch instructions

Agree in advance how dispatch orders will be sent, who can authorise them, and what documents should travel with outgoing material. Clear instructions prevent errors when stock moves quickly.

Why this matters

Chemical storage is subject to product compatibility, facility suitability and applicable safety and regulatory requirements. The details above are how a warehouse checks those requirements before your material arrives, rather than after.
