Ask a distributor in Mumbai where their stock is kept, and there is a good chance the answer is Bhiwandi. Over the years, this town in Thane district has become one of the largest warehousing clusters in Maharashtra. Here is why, and what it means for businesses storing chemicals and industrial materials.
Space within the Mumbai region
Mumbai has a huge consumer and industrial market, but very little affordable space for storage. Bhiwandi sits within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, close enough to serve the city, and has the land for large warehouses that the city cannot offer.
Road connections
Bhiwandi is linked by road to Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, and to the highways that carry freight north towards Gujarat and east towards Nashik and the rest of the state. Goods can reach customers across the region and move onward to other markets without passing through the city centre.
Access to the port
Businesses that import raw materials or export finished goods use the port at JNPA (Nhava Sheva). Bhiwandi's location makes it a practical staging point between the port and customers across the region.
A cluster of services
Because so many warehouses operate here, Bhiwandi has a large pool of transporters, labour, and suppliers of warehouse equipment and services. That depth makes it easier to run day-to-day operations and to scale up when volumes grow.
What this means for chemical storage
Not every warehouse in Bhiwandi is set up for chemicals. Storing industrial chemicals, paints or polymers needs a facility and team that understand compatibility, handling and record-keeping. When choosing a warehouse, ask:
- Will they review your MSDS/SDS before confirming storage?
- Can they handle your packaging, whether drums, IBC tanks, carboys or bags?
- How do they record stock and share it with you?
- Who handles daily receipts and dispatches?
Chemical storage is always subject to product compatibility, facility suitability and applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
